Themes and Core Values for Strategic Planning

Summary of Submissions from

Pilgrim Place Strategic Vision Committee

June 2021

Themes

The following themes have been proposed by Strategic Vision Committee members for examination during the strategic planning process.  The list is in order of the areas most frequently mentioned.  A list based on perceived importance was not attempted as those rankings, when given, were extremely variable.

Health Care / Caregiving – This is the most frequently mentioned theme.  Some submissions are without particularities, but others offer specifics such as: examine levels of mental and physical care that can be provided; explore skilled nursing options; investigate care delivery systems; continue emphasis on Person Centered Care; identify how staffing can be expanded to address care needs; explore partnering with other health care organizations; and work toward an integrated health services plan.  As one committee member aptly worded this theme: “Health Reimagined and Caregiving That Works.”

Technology – The overarching role of technology is the second most referenced theme with attention to institutional and individual needs. The scope includes: addressing the next level of communications requirements; utilizing health care advancements made possible by technology; and using technology to further increase the efficiency of campus operations.

Culture / Identity / Quality of Life and Work – More than one committee member notes that several possible themes of strategic planning are overlapping. That is certainly the case with certain key components of living and working at Pilgrim Place.  Under the combined theme given here, suggested areas for attention are: continue inclusion/diversity/equity training and awareness (enhanced cultural competence); give attention to leadership and transparency; define and promote the “identity” of Pilgrim Place; advance the “best place to work” agenda; encourage human connections and engagement; and empowerment of residents.

Sustainability – This is also a theme that was approached broadly. Some discussions clearly have underlying fiscal considerations, although without references to investments and balance sheets. Several committee members identify areas such as housing affordability, admissions and recruitment of residents, and retirement costs (in general) as related to the sustainability of Pilgrim Place.

Other Themes – Additional themes mentioned are: post-COVID challenges; servant leadership; links to the local colleges; remaining a free-standing organization; food service options; and smart architecture going forward.

Core Values

Pilgrim Place Mission Statement

Fostering a vibrant and inclusive senior community committed to

justice, peace and care of the Earth

Committee members were asked to identify what they perceive as core values embedded in the mission and vision statements of Pilgrim Place.  A brief explanation was requested for each value.  The following is a summary of the responses.

  • Acceptance of individuals, as they are, and respect for all persons are the core values most frequently identified.

  • The core values of acceptance and respect are also embedded in other descriptors offered such as “open” and “welcoming,” and the concept of “friendship.”

  • Diversity was cited in more than one submission.

  • Care for all living things is listed, and there is mention of “responsible environmental stewardship.”

  • The concept of community as a core value is identified as it applies to concern for the well-being of all and the promotion of the common good.

  • Words in the Mission Statement are cited, specifically “justice” and “peace.”

  • Commitment is repeatedly used to describe dedication to the core values listed.

Examples of Pilgrim Place core values were included in some responses and a few of those are listed here: Person Centered Care; solar panels; sale of Harrison lot; diversity of faiths; Festival; cultural competency training; community gardens; Napier Project; RHSP; United Nations Task Force; Peace Vigil; Patient Advocacy.
